OLD CHAPEL PROJECT
We need to ensure that we continue to raise funds for our day to day operations and plan for the increase in services which will be made possible by the additional capacity provided in the new premises.
The Glasgow Building Preservation Trust (GBPT), who are co-ordinating the overall project, are very much involved in raising the balance of the £1.7 million through a variety of funding applications. Their main focus of attention has been on fundraising for the capital costs with the most significant effort being paid to the second round application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Hot on the heels of producing all the documents for that application came submissions to The John Paul Getty Junior Charitable Trust, The Wolfson Foundation, The Robertson Trust and most recently the Barcapel Foundation.
Funds that have been secured to date are from the following grant aid bodies and funds: Glasgow City Council Better Glasgow Fund: £100,000, Historic Scotland: £261,000, Landfill Community Tax Credit Fund: £60,000, The Architectural Heritage Fund: £30,000, Cancer Support Scotland’s contribution: £268,000 and £74,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (Development Funding at first round pass).
Should our second round application to the HLF be successful the total raised will be increased from the current level of £793,300 to £1,109,000!
The GBPT are heavily involved in the next round of funding applications which we hope will generate more donations and we look to support them in whatever way we can. .
Work on developing the project and seeking the appropriate permissions has also been driven forward. Further investigative surveys have been undertaken and the drawings for the repairs, alterations and extension have been drawn up to the level of detail to enable the applications for Full Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent to be submitted. It is hoped that these permissions will be granted in July. In addition, important documents such as an Access Audit and Plan (essential to ensuring disabled access and intellectual access to the building is properly thought out), a Conservation Management Plan and an Activity Plan have been produced. None of these activities would have been driven forward without the help of the development funding grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the grant aid from Glasgow City Council.
Other activities include explorations into the possibility of harnessing carbon neutral energy sources and what level the building can be insulated to without compromising its architectural features.
As yet we are unable to comment on when work will start on the repair and renovation, however we hope that we may have a clearer position towards the middle of the year.
We still have a long way to go and must not forget that we still have to sustain our current business whilst raising additional funds for the project. If you want to help us with our fundraising please get in touch with Bill -
