First Annual Conference:'Who Wants to Be a Groupie?'
Monday 16th June, 9.30 - 3.30 The Campanile Hotel, Tunnel St, Glasgow.
Our first major Conference 'Who Wants to Be a Groupie?'
is an invitation to examine the whole philosophy of the 'support group':
- What is a support group?
- Who does it seek to support?
- How should it be run?
- What services should it offer?
These and other vital questions will be answered in our quest
to make our support groups stronger and even more relevant to the needs of those in our
communities who are living with cancer. Professor Sir Kenneth Calman, the founder of
Tak Tent and our Honorary President, will be giving a keynote address.
Both Macmillan Cancer Support and the Youth Cancer Forum Scotland
will be contributing too.
Snacks and a buffet lunch will be provided.
There is no charge for attending. If you require expenses paid or accommodation,
please enquire at the Tak Tent office. If you would like to attend, please ring 0141 211 0122 or
email us

Youth Cancer Forum Scotland is launched. On September 28th, Scotland’s youngest MSP Aileen Campbell launched the Youth Cancer Forum Scotland at the Salutation Hotel in Perth, where she was joined by health professionals and 30 young people affected by cancer.By being able to access peer support through the forum, many young adults will feel less isolated and feel more able to deal with short and long-term effects of cancer. The group will also help address issues such as receiving care appropriate to their age range, as well as having support in hospitals and in the community, and more information about financial support. The MSP said, "This national forum will bring together young people through annual conferences and social events as well as creating an online community for those who are isolated due to treatment or geographical constraints."The Youth Cancer Forum Scotland is the result of a partnership between CLIC Sargent, conTAK & Tak Tent and Teenage Cancer Trust. Funding for the launch of the Forum has been provided by the Big Lottery Fund. For more information, go to Youth Cancer Forum Scotland.

'Tak Tent' Becomes 'Cancer Support Scotland' After an excellent Extraordinary General Meeting held in March, it was decided by 77 votes to 22 that the organisation will be known as 'Cancer Support Scotland', with 'Tak Tent' ('Take Care') in Old Scots) becoming its motto. While the new title will undoubtedly raise our profile in the whole charity field, it is felt by many that 'Tak Tent' now takes on an even greater significance as we continue to found a greater number of caring groups in the communities. Significantly, we have the full support of Professor Sir Kenneth Calman, our Founder, who also expressed his delight with our intention to make 'Tak Tent' a very proud and unique motto.
